TGK First Annual Rap Awards 2012

The rap game is a tough field of competition. If you aren't beefing with some one through words, it's through album sales.  In turn, you have to sift through a lot of garbage music in order to find the actual gems. Now, I'm not the biggest listener to underground stuff, but here are my most notables of the A list names.

Mixtape of the year

I think the mixtape of the year goes to Fabolous' Soul Tape 3. The follow up to the previous Soul Tapes, Fab showed that he wasn't out of the game just yet, although it has been years since his last studio release.  Other notable tapes include Childish Gambino's Royalty and Game's California Republic.  Royalty, in my opinion, is a stronger rap album than Gambino's Camp from 2011, and really displays how much Mr. Glover has grown as a rapper.  California Republic was really foreshadowing to Game's Jesus Piece and showed everyone that the Compton native could still put out quality albums without the help of 50 Cent. Look out for Wale's Folarin which is due out December 24th. My favourite rapper out there is really making is wait

Sad to say...

It was good to see DMX drop a CD this year. He's a veteran in the rap world, and one of the few that keeps it real. You've seen him on radio shows this year, still dressed like the same dude you saw in the early 2000's, calling out your favourite rapper's for their fakeness

Also sad to admit that I gave Based on a T.R.U. Story by 2 Chainz a couple spins. He's not the most lyrical, and doesn't really talk about much other than strippers and chains, but damn he has good energy (see G.O.O.D. Music's Mercy), and his ish goes hard when I'm faded.

Albums of the Year

There's too many albums that came out this year to pick one, and like I said from the get-go, the point is to sift through the madness of music out there. So, in no particular order, here we go:

Game - Jesus Piece.
Chuck Taylor is back, and this record is definitely going to keep his name in people's mouths.  You may have heard Celebration on your radio, now check out the rest of the tracks.
Kanye West Presents G.O.O.D. Music - Cruel Summer
Pusha T? YES! He's been making guest features, and now he's tearing up these tracks. Forget the beef with Lil' Wayne, that dude has fallen off.  Guest appearances by Ma$e, 2 Chainz, Jay-Z, and it's good to hear John Legend's voice again with 'Ye.  Sadly, I would have liked to hear some new tracks since Chief Keef's I Don't Like doesn't really deserve to be on here.
Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d city
What do I need to tell you? If you havent heard of this, or havent been put on it, get some new friends. Listen for yourself, and decide, but I am confident you will realize that Kendrick will be here for a long time
DJ Drama - Quality Street Music
A real DJ mixtape/CD, the title is very fitting. After this, I'm boycotting all of Khaled's releases past, present, and future.
Meek Mill - Dreams and Nightmares
Made up of pure energy, the first track has you hyped up and anxious to hear what else is coming up, and surely, Meek does not disappoint. This is almost a Dreamchaser's 3, just retitled
Nas - Life is Good
The legendary God's Son dropped, probably, the most slept on album of the year! I've maybe heard single's ONCE in the radio, while everyone else was suckling on Drake's teat. Get your heads together and give this a listen!!

Well, I guess that's it.  I'm sure there are many that I havent mentioned, but that's why there is a comments box below. USE IT
